SWIMMING SPORTS. Excellent swimming sports and a I picnic day were held at the Patea I beach on Monday and gate receipts | were very gratifying to Seaside Imj provement Society, who are to be congratulated on the wonderful improvements and facilities which have I Been provided during the past yearI for seaside enthusiasts. Some events were disappointing in the small entries received, but good finishes in the races and diving were witnessed. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr. F. Naismith presented the cups and trophies, and on behalf of the society thanked the Surf Club for their work as officials and the entrants and public for attending. Messrs. L. T. Adams and G. Frase: acted as swimming judges and Mr. P. Ryan (Hawera) the diving. Results were as follows: Boys' 100yds., under 16 (Quickenden Cup):—Sheppard (Waverley) 1. H. Madden (Hawera) 2, J. Matamata is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Boswell. Mr and Mrs. H. A. Boswell and Joan Cave, during the week-end with their guests, Mrs. Ford, for Matamata, and will later go on to Auckland and Whangarei. Mr. Allan Hunger, Wellington, has been home during the holidays, Mr. Phil Smith, Hunterville, was in Patea during the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. D. Fraser. Hawera, were visitors during New Year. Mr. Ron Clarke. Hawera, has been | the guest of Mrs. G. Clarke. Mr. and Mrs. E. Corbett, Hawera, visited Patea during the week-end. Mr. L. Findlay has returned to Palmerston North after visiting Mrs. H. L. Moore. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Cameron have returned from Hastings. Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Roberts have returned from Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. L. Boyle, New Plymouth. visited Patea during the weekend. Mr. J. Archer. New Plymouth, was a New Year visitor. Mr and Mrs. Miller and family are guests of Mrs. H. Peacocke. New Year’s Eve in Patea was celebrated with great festivity on Saturday night. Crowds lined the streets with much noise and gaiety and every available parking space was filled. Business was not above the average, most people having finished their shopping at Christmas. Later in the evening many gay parties carried out the old-time custom of "First Footing” until the "wee” small hours. Miss H. Lithgow, Hawera, was home for New Year. Messrs. Brian Currie and Sopp, Wanganui, have been guests of Mr and Mrs. A. B. Currie.
