SHORTAGE OF TRAINEES
CONCERN OF HOSPITALS FEW GIRLS OFFERING POSITION BECOMING ACUTE In common with other boards throughout the Dominion, the Wanganui Hospital Board is experiencing difficulty in securing sufficient probationers for its nursing staff. With a shortage of trainees and much sickness during recent months, the staff of the Public Hospital has experienced a busy time. The improved conditions of work and increased wages in office and domestic work is considered to be responsible to some extent for the shortage of trainees. Some years ago there was an over-supply of girls seeking admission to hospitals as probationers but of recent years the shortage has been becoming more and more acute. The position to-day is causing much concern to hospital boards which, in many instances, have had to offer more inducements in order to maintain their staffs o? probationers. The standard of education required for probationers is the proficiency certificate. despite an attempt recently to have the standard raised to matriculation.
