VIOLA BARKER SCHOOL OF DANCING

ANNUAL DISPLAY TO-MORROW To-morrow (Friday) is the date fixed for the annual display of the Viola Barker School of Dancing. An interesting feature this year is a curtainraiser, a one-act play “My Kingdom For a presented by the Marton

players. The characters are as follows: —Eleanore, Miss P. Harris, Oliver, Miss J. Murray; Annette, Miss C. Rawson; Hilda, Mrs. R. A. Church; Miss Farthingdale, Mrs. J. B. Thorpe; Ernestine, Mrs. F. Harper; Shirley. Miss M. Blennerhassett; Rosamund, Miss O. Harris; Miss Millison, Miss Harding. Following this play the pupils of the dancing school will be seen in various numbers. The admission charges are Is 6d for adults, children under 14, Is. Reserves may be made at Messrs Mogridge and Son’s free of charge.

ROAD CYCLE RACE

The first of a series of four road cycle races was held on Wednesday afternoon, the course being twice round Nga Tawa block, a distance of eight miles. There were eight sarters and the race resulted in a very close finish between the placed men. J. Evans (2min. 30sec. start) won by a couple of yards from W. Watts (1.30), with R. Ellery (1.30) third. Also: started: J. McCormick and Weils (scr.), R. McMillan (2.30) and B. Brider (2.30).

FEILDING PIPE BAND

VISITS MARTON ON SATURDAY The committee set up to arrange for the visit of the Feilding Pipe Band to Marton on Saturday held" a meeting on Tuesday evening. The sub-com-mittees reported that arrangements were complete, and a strong ladies' committee had ben formed to attend to the supper for the dance. The band will arrive in Marton anil be ready to play by 3.30 p.m., and will march through the main streets. During the course of the afternoon the band will give exhibitions of the latest wheeling and marching. The band will again parade in the evening and at 8.30 p.m. adjourn to the Druide’s Hail j where a dance will be held. Piper McI Farlane will entertain with yodelling | numbers, while dancing items will be j given by the McQueen twins and Miss Mary Twigg. As the band is coming to Marton for the purpose of brightening up the late night, it is to be hoped that the public will respond liberally and the street be crowded both in the afternoon and evening. The band has been practising hard for this event and the public should not be disappointed . with the display.

MARTON BOWLING CLUB

Perfect weather prevailed for spoil on Wednesday afternoon, and golf tennis and bowls had a good following I of players. The Marton green shows ; | decided improvement and played ver; true, whilst the grounds and flower: ' proved very attractive to visitors ' Several practice games were played j with the following results:— Gibbs, S. Marr, Miles 28, v. Playle ’ Sanders, Gorrie 16. , Watt and Ferens 15, v. Williams anc Healy 21. Kelly, W. Marr, MacGregor 14, i Denbow, Lewis, Hawkins 29. Honeyman, Mogridge, Thomson 21 I Hainsworth, Whitfield, Hunter 23.

MAGISTRATE’S COURT

The Magistrate’s Court sat at Mai ton yesterday, Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M presiding. The traffic inspector (Mr. H. . Fowler) proceeded against R. I Ellery for driving a motor-car alon Wing’s Line without being the holds of a current driver’s licence. Defenc ant pleaded guilty, and the magi: trate imposed a fine of 20s, costs 10s. In an undefended civil claim, jud£ ment was given for plaintiff, C. Step v. C. C. Jensen, £l3 7s 6d, costs £2 16 6d.
