S.P.C.A Junior League

Dear Girls and Boys.—This week's letter is about true incidents in animal life. The first one I am going «o tell you about, concerns my own cat. Betty. Now Betty v; a beautiful Persian cat with a fluffy collar of fur

found her face, and big eyes which change colour with the light. Betty has a son called Nigger—a huge black Persian with bright eyes like shoe buttons. Nigger and Betty are put to bed every night about 9 o'clock in the wash-house; they have a cosy bed in a large box with a blanket on | the bottom. One night I kept Nigger lin the house as he had a cold, and in 'the morning when I went to let Betty lout what do you think I found? A wee black and white kitten in Betty’s ; bed. Just one. Betty was so proud of it. She purred with pleasure when I we looked at it. Suddenly she seemed ito think of something and ran in the house. I followed to see what she was up to. She went to Nigger and gave him a little “good morning” lick and then grabbed him by the neck and tried to drag him to the wash-house. As Nigger was much too strong for her I picked him up and followed her into the wash-house. We showed him the new baby kitten, but do you know he was afraid of it and ran away, f then went away and left Betty looking after her baby. About an hour later I went to my bedroom and there was naughty Nig- ! ger sleeping on my bed. I sent him off and I went away. Later on I went in again and what a surprise I haa to see Nigger was back on the bed, and so was Betty and the baby kitten. I was so surprised I stood and watched. Betty got up and went outside and left Nigger in charge of the baby. Well, do you know Nigger stayed there ail the rest of the morning and afternoon looking after that wee thing. He washed it and nosed it into the centre of the bed so it wouldn't fall off and curled himself round it to keep it warm. When I put them all to bed that night the three of them curled up together and went to sleep. Every morning after that Betty would carry her kitten into my room to a bed I made on the floor, and Nigger would look after it. At night Betty would pick it up in her mouth ana I take it back to the wash-house. When the kitten grew bigger Nigger played with it and washed it, and when it was tired he would hold it between his front paws and they would go to sleep. Betty seems to know I am telling you about her, she is trying to chew my pen as I write. 1 will tell you some more true stories next week. Goodbye till then. Yours sincerely—“TOßY’.” New Members.—Billie Fargie, Wanganui East School.
