WINTER SHOW

HAWERA FESTIVAL PRIMARY PRODUCE ON DISPLAY The 29th. annual winter show at Hawera was opened yesterday afternoon by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, who arrived by air. The large exhibition halls are filled completely and with excellent entries in the competitive classes, the show promises to be one of the most successful staged. After viewing the show the Minister said the exhibits reflected the greatest credit on the association and the province of Taranaki. In these days when quality was of paramount importance in pasture, stock, and farm products all would realise the value of the work of show associations in maintaining the highest standards. The farmer who was prepared to place his produce on exhibition in competition with* other farmers provided an inspiration for all who worked on the land and this friendly rivalry, so admirably encouraged, had done much to raise the standard of our exports and make them acceptable to buyers in other countries. Owing to school holidays occurring immediately before the show, the entries in the Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Club vegetable section were not as numerous as in former years, but the quality of the exhibits was well up to the usual standard, as the judge’s complimentary remarks testified. The judge, Mr. B. Beswick, president of the Wanganui Philatelic Society, described the general standard of this year’s stamp display as much higher than last year. It was apparent, he said, that contributors had benefited by the comparison of their entries last year with those of the winners. The Taranaki Philatelic Society (Hawera section) was warmly complimented on sponsoring an exhibition of interest to collectors and to the general public. It was pleasing to note an increased number of cheese exhibits at the show this year, stated the judges. The quality of the exhibits was uniform and well up to the standard of previous shows, reflecting credit on those responsible for manufacture. Although a few entries were showing quite enough acid and were rather slitty in texture, the majority were fairly close and smooth in the body. The finish of the cheese was very attractive, being dean and evidencing much care and attention on the part of exhibitors. Speaking generally, the butter exhibits were very pleasing and in most instances evidenced care in the selection of the cream used and good judgment and skill in manufacture, stated the judges. The prize winning exhibits in the class taken from the grading stores were of particularly good quality and the majority of the entries in this class demonstrated the excellent keeping quality of New Zealand butter of everyday manufacture. The exhibits packed in metal foil wrappings were of good colour and substantiated the use of this type of wrapping material. Very few exhibits were not up to show standards. Butter Classes. 281 b.
