“MAD ABOUT MUSIC.” Deanna Durbin, starring in “Mad about Music,” concluding to-morrow at the Majestic Theatre, continues to draw appreciative houses. Deanna is mad about music only to the extent of Gounod's “Ave Maria,” assisted by the Vienna Boys’ Choir .known to New Zealanders, and several light efforts of which the most outstanding is “I Love to Whistle.” Deanna, cast as a pupil of a Swiss girls’ school, is, as a result of her own imagery, compelled te produce a father to substantiate her inventions. And Herbert Marshall is the pseudo father pounced upon in a railway station. “Marie Walewska.” It has been claimed of “Marie Walewska,” the magnificent Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer picture, which is to commence on Friday at the Majestic Theatre, that for once Greta Garbo becomes a character subsidiary to another—in this case, to Charles Boyer. It is difficult to agree; for Garbo dominates, with the complete skill which has made her the finest actress of the films, a film notable for extraordinarily good direction, a script which Tew in recent years have equalled, let alone surpassed, and an intensely interesting story which is told without heroics. It is. for once, the case of the players subordinated to the interest of the story, and as the story concerns itself with the career of Napoleon and his degeneration from “the liberator of Europe to a son-in-law”- incidentally one of the finest lines of talkie history —to an Emperor craving more and more power, there is in it enough to serve, and to serve well.
