SUDDEN DEATH

LABOUR COUNCIL ( ANIMIIATI. LATE MR J. P. HOOPER The death occurred suddenly at .. work yesterday morning of Mr John Phair Hooper, aged 48 years, of 44 Smithfield Road, who was one of lhe Labour Party’s candidates for thu Wanganui City Council at the forthcoming municipal elections. The late Mr Hooper was employed on the work of clearing up the excavations for moa bones on Mr J. A. Tod iw property at Makirikiri and was engaged at his work this morning when he took ill suddenly and passed away. The late Mr Hooper was a prominent member of the Labour Party in Wanganui, which he had served lux , many years and was president of Wanganui Labour Representation Committee. During the present municipal election campaign, he had presided at a number of meetings oi electors. During the years of the depression, the late Mr Hooper was prominent m measures to raise funds lor the relief of distress and served for a time on the Unemployment Committee set up by Mr N. G. Armstrong during hu term as Mayor. The late Mr Hooper was a returned soldier and had not been enjoying good health for soma time. The late Mr Hooper leaves a widow, three sons and three daughters. Al yesterday’s meeting of lhe Wanganu City Council, reference was made tfl his death by Mr W. J. Rogers, Mayoj of Wanganui, and on his motion thf council expressed its sympathy with the family and relatives. The meeting of Labour Candida'e* for the municipal elections which wa* to have been held last evening, wad adjourned as a mark of respect U the late Mr Hooper. There was large attendance at Wanganui and before the adjournment tributes were paid by Messrs J. B. CotteriU. M.P., and W. J. Rogers, to the memory of the deceased gentleman. A motion of condolence was passed, all present standing in silence.
