W AIM ARINO RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING* There was a large attendance at the Druids’ Hall on Saturday evening, for the annual meeting of the Waimarino Returned Soldiers’ Association. Mr. C. lc F. Honore was in the chair. The meeting commenced by paying silent tribute to two members of the association who had passed away during the year, viz., Messrs. R. Tuatini and H. W. Barry. The following annual report was presented to the meeting: —"The association has had only a moderately cessful year, but its work is entering an important phase. In the past the bulk of the activities centre! round unemployed and the ivV'ief of returned men in need. While this still

occupies the committee to a considerable extent, relatively more prosperous times have lessened the de-* mind on the funds from which assistance is drawn, and the bodies controlling them have cut down to a great extent the grants that are made to associations. The new land legislation will probably occupy a great deal of the time of the next Dominion council meeting, which will take place a month later than usual this year. Your committee has discussed with a meeting of farmer members problems affecting this district; a report covering the discussion at this meeting and of another meeting of Mangapurua farmers has been forwarded to the special lands committee set up at the last Dominion council meeting. There is no doubt that the pensions side ol the associations’ work will be somewhat, affected by the new health legislation and the proposed superannuation scheme. But there is at present no indication that returned men will be adversely affected, indeed, it seem., likely that the reverse will be the case. Poppy sales were again above those of last year, and constituted a i record, due, we think, to the fact that ' returned men themselves sell the poppies. The committee regret to report that during the year two membcic have died. Mr. R. Tautini was a member of the committee for several years, and he will be greatly missed. Mr. H. W. Barry was also a valued member of the association. The balance-sheet showed a reduced credit, balance. Anzac Day.—Considerable discussion look place concerning the advisability of holding a parade on Anzac Day. Up to the present no parade has been held. Mr. Honore believed that the time was opportune to have a parade, it. would bring the boys together.

Mr. Bettjeman stated that if a parade was for the purpose of impressing the younger generation, he did not support the idea, for he believed that the children had enough of the spirit of Anzac Day impressed upon them in the schools. Messrs. C. M. Whyte and J. B. Hogg spoke in support of a parade and tnu keeping of Anzac Day as a day ol remembrance. On being put to the vote it was decided by a large majority to hold a parade ot returned men next Anzac Day. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. C. le F. Honore; vice-presidents, Messrs. T. E. McLean and W. Harnett; committee, Messrs. J. B. Hogg, M. Geraghty. J. Aislabie, M. Keepa, C. M. Whyte, A. Bott, T. Mather, J. Bergman, W Journeau, R. Mosen, J. Black; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. M. Heise, hon. auditor, Mr. F. L. Lee; delegate to Dominion conference, Mr. J. M. Heise. The president expressed the thanks of the association to Mr. F. L. Lee (auditor), and Messrs. C. Chesnuti and D. Gardner, who had been of considerable service to the association. Mr. Honore further intimated that application had been made for a permit enabling the association to hold an art union for the purpose of augmenting the funds. The close of the meeting was followed by a social hour when the men got together in reminiscent mood.

PERSONAL

It will come as a note of regret to pupils and old pupils of the Ohakune District High School to learn that Miss Hind of the High School stall, has received notice of her appointment to the Waipawa High School. Her departure will mean a severe loss to the High School. The many friends of Mr. L. A. Eastman will be pleased to learn that Mr. Eastman, who has been an inmate of the Wanganui Hospital for some time, following an accident, is now back in Raetihi again and feeling well. We understand that Ohakune Primary School is to lose another of its good teachers in the person of Miss Major, who has received word of hei appointment elsewhere. Miss Majoi, during her stay in Ohakune, has endeared herself to the children of the younger classes, who no doubt will be sad at her departure.
