MISCELLANEOUS CASES YESTERDAY’S SITTING The following cases were dealt with by Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Wanganui yesterday morning:— Edward Sutherland was charged with being drunk in charge of a bicycle at Putiki on April 18. SeniorSergeant Capp stated that defendant fell off the cycle near his home. The magistrate said he could not overlook the fact that defendant was a source of danger, not only to himself, but to other traffic. A fine of £2, with costs 10s, was imposed. Clarence John Cooper, for driving with one headlight, was fined £l, with costs 10s. Margaret Jean Currie, who drovu over a fire hose in Parkes Avenue, was fined 10s, with costs 10s. Charged with failing to keep to the left on the Parapara Road, Eric Dewson was lined £3, with costs 10s. Noel Whitmarsh Hawkins was charged with allowing his bicycle to be towed by a motor-car in Somme Parade. The police stated that defendant rode the cycle and held on to the motor-car. A fine of 10s, with costs 10s, was imposed. Arthur Thomas Herbert, for cutting a corner on Taupo Quay, was fined £2, with costs 17s. Rod MacKenzie was charged with attempting to drive over a railway crossing at Fordell when the line was not clear. Senior-Sergeant Capp sai l that defendant did not see the train until too late and his car was damaged. The crossing was a private one with gates. Defendant said his view of the line was obstructed. The extent of the damage to his car was £7O. He was ordered to pay costs only and 5s 4d damage to the locomotive. In ordering that these costs be paid, the magistrate remarked: "I think the Government wants all it can get just now.” Malvern Keith Ross was charged with leading two ponies over the footway of the railway bridge at Aramoho. Mr H. Keesing, for defendant, stated that he had attended the sports at Parikino and one of the ponies cast a shoe and became lame and defendant was tempted to shorten the distance by taking it over the bridge. A fine of 10s with costa was inflicted. For driving over a fire hose in Parkes Avenue, Francis John Sumpter was fined 10s with costs 10s. Tui Ihaia, who drove a car without a warrant of fitness, was fined ss, with costs 12s. Lawrence Ivil was charged with dangerous driving on the main highway near Turakina and was fined £2, with costs 10s. John Richard Leonard, who failed to carry a warrant of fitness when driving a car, was fined ss, with costs 10s. Charged with a similar offence, James Robert. Wilkie was fined 10s, with costs. Being the owner of the car, the magistrate said he should know his obligations. Mike Taiaroa, who left a car unattended in the Avenue for one and three-quarter hours, was fined 255, with costs 17s. Fordell Box Co., Ltd., were charged with operating a lorry, which together with the load exceeded four tons, over Polson’s Bridge. Mr T. Blennerhassett, for informants, stated that the load carried was 6 tons 17i cwt. Mr C. N. Armstrong, for defendants, stated that before the company entered into operations there was no restriction on the weight and the bridge had been strengthened since then by defendants. The bridge was not on a main highway. The magistrate said he would only impose a penalty of £1 with costs, but defendants must keep the load within the four tons limit in future. G. Laws, for allowing cattle to wander at Kaitoke, was fined 10s, with costs 12s, solicitor’s fee 10s 6d. Joseph Glover pleaded guilty to employing two female assistants after 10.30 p.m. He stated that on this particular night there was a rush ol business. The magistrate said it was usually claimed by defendants in these cases that they had been catering for patrons after the pictures. However, no alteration had been made in the law and so long as it remained he must impose penalties. A fine of £l, with costs 10., was imposed.
