REGENT THEATRE
“RIDING ON AIR" Mysterious aerial smugglers, a highspeed romance, a rivalry between two small-town newspaper correspondents, anil a device for controlling aeroplanes in flight by a radio beam, are all woven into an exciting basis for Joe E. Brown's newest film, “Riding on Air.” which concludes to-day arid tonight. With Guy Kibbee as an oil stock swindler, and Florence Rice as the girl for whom Brown and his rival, Vinton Haworth, battle throughout, the picture offers a wealth of thrills and laughs. “The Final Hour,” on the same programme has Ralph Bellamy and Marguerite Churchill in the leading roles. One of the most popular singers New Zealand has ever taken to its heart is Dan Foley, the Irish tenor, who makes his farewell appearances at the Regent Theatre to-day and tonight. Dan Foley has been well described as “New Zealand's John McCormack. His repertoire includes the famous “Rebel Song." “Smiling Irish Eyes," "Did Your Mother Come from Ireland?” "Father O’Flynn," etc. The singer is making a farewell tour of New Zealand prior to departing for South Africa. "Poppy” and “King of the Gamblers.’’ “Poppy," W. C. Fields' latest Paramount film, coming to-morrow to the Regent Theatre, marks the return of the comedian to the role he played in his two greatest hits in the past. "Professor Eustace McGargie,” of “Pappy” is a character portrayed by Fields in his first stage success. "Poppy." and in his first film success, "Sally of the Sawdust.” So well did the public receive Akim Tamiroff as a big time gambler—dressed in modern clothes—that he may never wear a kimona, turban, fez or tunic again. The noted character player appeared in mufti for the first time in “Her Husband Lies.” and did so well he was immediately cast for a similar role in Paramount’s "King of Gamblers," a Tiffany Thayer story of the slot machine racket, which is on the same programme.
