CLOSING CEREMONY

WANGANUI CROQUET CLUB PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES With the closing of the Wanganui Croquet Club on Saturday afternoon the season has been brought to a successful conclusion, and though the previous day had been very wet the weather proved fine enough to indulge in competitions on the lawn facing the pavilion. There was an attendance of close on 100, including visitors and representatives of sister clubs. The president, Mrs. N. Lynch, in welcoming the Mayoress (Mrs. W. J. Rogers) and all present, also extended a warm welcome to Mrs. A. Crawford, saying that the members were very glad to have her among them again. This was endorsed by hearty applause. The president referred to the very successful croquet season, the holding of the Dominion tournament, also the association and club tournaments. There had been some fine play seen on the greens. She was sufc there were some players who would become champions. Mrs. Lynch thanked all for their help and cooperation during the season. Mrs. Rogers, who presented the trophies, said that it was fortunate that the weather had cleared for tre closing ceremony. She congratulated the club on its successful season and also congratulated the winners of the trophies. As the members were entering the recess season, they will keep alive the social elements of the club with the usual winter months’ activities. Mrs. Rogers extended best wishes for the success of the club in future years. Mrs. Rogers was presented with a very lovely spray of berries, deep apricot shaded rosebuds and fern. Equally beautiful was the spray of berries, toning geberas and fern handed to Mrs. Lynch. An enjoyable afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Carrig and a bevy of helpers, the big table in the pavilion being decorated with choice chrysanthemums. A “bring-and-buy” table attracted many buyers. Following the presentation of prizes, Mrs. Lynch congratulated the winners of the trophies. She mentioned that one of their club members, Mrs. Harle, was going away shortly on an extended tour to America, and on behalf of the club wished her bon voyage and a happy holiday, pending a presentation. Committee members assisted in turn with the various competitions held during the afternoon. The afternoon’s competitions were won as follows:—Angles, Miss Burgess; skittles (1), Mrs. W. G. Bassett, (2) Miss Notman; one ball break, Mr. Jarvie; crazy hoops. Miss Langton; ladder. Mr. D. McClymont; golf croquet, Mrs. S. Goodey; hitting the bell, Mrs. Fisher.
