WANGANUI CLUB 1938 SEASON OPENED VISITORS FROM PALMERSTON AND MARTON The Wanganui Harrier Club's 193? season was officially declared open at the Aramoho boatshed on Saturday afternoon by Mr W. J. Rogers, Mayor of Wanganui, who dispatched 57 runners on a four-mile run. Eleven members of the Palmerston North Y.M.C.A. The run was in charge of the club raptain. Mr E. Gowan, who took the field up Brunswick Road to K.P.’s, across the hills to Roberts Avenue, down the riverbank and back up Cumbrae Place to Brunswick Road. When the riverbank was reached again, the runners were halted and a run-in over a distance of about 400 yards was held. The first-year runners were sent off first, the winner being R. Harris, with J. Wilkins second, both showing good form throughout the run. I. Wallace was the first man home in the intermediate pack, but the scratch pack was so well bunched that no winners’ names were taken. After the run the competitors and about 40 supporters of the club were entertained at afternoon tea. The president, Mr B. Clark, welcomed the ~l:’*.crs and the Mayor. Mr Rogers extended his best wishes to the club for the season. Mr J. B. Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui, also added his best wishes and expressed his satisfaction at seeing so much interest taken in the sport. Mr W. L. Young, patron of the club, also added a few words of congratulation. Other speakers were Messrs C. R. White, G. Benson (president of the West Coast Centre), and A. C. Bourgeois. Mr Dashwood, president of the Marton Harrier Club, returned thanks on behalf of his club, and Mr Oxenham (captain) replied on behalf o' the Palmerston North Club. , Three cheers for the ladies responsible for the afternoon tea concluded the gathering.
