TENNIS IN ENGLAND

MAYFROY’S SUCCESSES

LONDON, March 30.

C. E. Malfroy was unbeaten at the Herga Club’s tournament at Harrowlast week, says the New Zealand Herold’s London correspondent. He won the men’s singles by defeating C. M Jones, 6—4, 7—5, and, with his partner, F. H. D. Wilde, won the doubles title from M. D. Deloford and C. M. Jones, 3—6, 6—3, 6—2. The mixed doubles were divided between Miss B. Nuthall and Malfroy and four other players, this section of the tournament not being completed. Mayfroy was somewhat favoured in the singles, in that Jones came to the final rather footsore after a semi-final played in the morning and a men’s doubles match shortly after lunch. Melfroy had also played a doubles. Jones kept the lead, however, up to 4—3 in the first set, in which he tried to counter Malfroy’s drop-shots and volleys with good hard driving and overhead work. But perpetual chasing of the ball tired him, and, after 4-ail, he served two double faults in the next game, and lost that game and the next which Malfroy took to loxc for the set.

The second set was very well fought, neither man being able to a in his service for a long time. Malfroy led 2-1, Jones 4—3 and 5—4, playing a lovely drop shot to finish the ninth game. But then, tiring rapidly, Jones began to miss easy shots, especially his low volleys, nearly all of which he netted, and Malfroy, putting in some very crafty work, won all the next, three games for the match. Malfroy made a most spectacular backhand rally behind his head tc, win the advantage game, and, all through his volleying and lobbing were of very high class.
