GONVILLE CROQUET CLUB

END OF THE SEASON The official closing of the lawns of the Gonville Croquet Club was held on Wednesday, a large number of members and visitors attending. The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs W. J. Rogers) were present and were welcomed on arrival by the president, Mrs F. Uttley. Apologies were received from Mr J. Morrison, patron of the club, Mrs Morrison and several members.

After welcoming all present, the president (Mrs Uttley) said that the Gonville Croquet Club had had a most enjoyable playing season, the summer being ideal for sport, and she congratulated members for the way in which they had worked, and played off their matches during the season. The inter-club play for the Wedderspoon and McLeod Cups had been most enjoyable and had stimulated friendly interest. Mangaweka and Wanganui East were congratulated on winning and retaining the respective cups. Mrs Uttley thanked all those who had given trophies, and conveyed her thanks to the committee, tea conveners, stallholders, and those in charge of the afternoon tea, also to members for their help during the past.

Sympahty was extended to the relatives of two esteemed members, Mis Mclntyre and Mrs H. Brider, and also a beloved friend, Mr F. Webb Jones, who had died during the year. The Mayor congratulated members on the conclusion ot their successful playing season, and paid tribute to the capable manner in which they had run their club during the past year, and wished them every success in the future.

Mrs W. J. Rogers, who was handed a bouquet of chrysanthemums, presented the trophies won during the year. Mrs Uttley handed a gift to the secretary, Mrs Orchard, for her great help during the season. An excellent afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, the table being decorated with vases of zinnias and foliage. In charge of the tea weie Mesdames Wallace, Vincent, Andrews, Dudding and helpers. The sponge cake competition was judged by Mrs Wallace, the winner being Mrs Hampton. The cushion competition was won by Mrs Beaven

Those in charge of the various competitions and games were: Ladder, Mesdames T. Warnock and Johnston; crazy hoops, Mrs J. Burrell; golf croquet, Mrs Burrell; oneball break, Mesdames Lynch and R. Murphy; competition and stall, MCodames Brown and Carlyle.

Among others present were: Mesdames F. Warnock, Clark, F. Wood, E. Orchard, Hartnett, Beaven, Drake, W. Healey, Andrews, R. G. Firth, R Hampton, Ogier, A. E. Halligan, Gavin Burns, J. Ferris, Ginn, Harris, Moore, Lockett and Fisher, Misses Joyce Leyland, Peggy Lockett, and Grace Slane. Presentation of Trophies. Trophies were presented as follows: A Yankee: Mr F. Harrison; runner-up, Mrs F. Wood. B Yankee. Mrs Lynch; runner-up, Mr Burrell. A level: Mr F. Harrison; runner-up, Mrs Fisher. B level: Mrs Lyncn; runner-up, Mrs Burrell. C level: Mrs Carline. Shortt Cup: Mrs Brown, runner-up, Mrs Lynch. P.H. first grade, A: Mrs Lockett; runner-up, Mrs F. Wood. P.H. second grade, B. Mrs Lynch; runner-up, Mrs Carlinc. Mrs Lockett was the winner of Mrs Healey's trophy.
