EMPRESS OF BRITAIN
LIN EK IMPRESSES AUCKLAND CROWD [ Per res* Association.) AUCKLAND, April 12. Preceded oy the greyhound liner, Awatea, the giant Empress of Britain sailed with queenly grace up Waitemata Harbour shortly after 7 o’clock this morning. Watched by many thousands of people from vantage points around the harbour, the 42,000-ton liner was the largest ship ever to enter Waitemata. There was an ebb tide, but the Empress of Britain was berthed without hitch, and the commanaer complimented the pilot. Captain Beswick, whose record in New Zealand dates back to 1899 and the days of the three-masted barques.
As the big white ship, topped with her immense buff funnels, was escorted up the harbour by two tugs and a score of small craft and speed boats cut across the bows of the great white swan like a group of ducklings, a crowd also awaited her arrival at the wharf.
Most of the 450 passengers are on sight-seeing tours about the city. The Empress of Britain leaves on evening for Suva and America.
