PATEA ASSOCIATION

INTERESTING TOURNAMENT An excellent programme was submitted by the Patea Boxing Association at its tournament on Monday night. Mr. R. W. Haddow refereed, Mr. F. Naismith was announcer and official seconds were Messrs. Goodwin and Reardon.

The cup for the most scientific boxer of the night, presented by Mr. George Williams (oldest member of the association), was won by M. O’Neill, Wanganui. Points in the Brosnan Shield up to the tournament were: Wanganui 7, Patea 6, Okato 3. Results were as follow; H. Gordon (Wanganui) 5.7, v. Young Rodley (Alton) 6.0; three limin. rounds.—Both boys showed promise, Rodley having the advantage of longer reach. Gordon, being fast, on his feet, kept himself out of trouble. A good mix up in the last round saw Gordon the winner on points. McPherson (Manawatu) 9.0, v. T. Whatnough (Wanganui) 8.13; three 2min. rounds.—The first round was spoilt by clinching, Whatnough taking the fight to McPherson, but his blows were mishitting. Whatnough used his right to advantage, connecting to the head and face, causing McPherson to cover up. Whatnough’s solid rights to the head had McPherson groggy, McPherson clinching on several occasions. Whatnough won on points.

Woisin (Otakeho) 10.13, v. Scott (Wellington) 11.2; three 2min. rounds. —A hard-hitting pair, both boys exchanging blows freely. Scott’s weight added to his advantage of reach. Both boys were inclined to swing wildly. Scott had Woisin very groggy in last round, Woisin going down for four and five. Scott was the winner on points.

W. Ramsay (Wanganui) 8.2, v. Rodley (Alton) 7.12; three 2min. rounds. — Both boys showed a fair knowledge of the glove, Rodley seeming to be the most experienced. Rodley kept Ramsay off with good straight lefts. Ramsay gained points by repeatedly boring in. Ramsay was the winner on points. G. Moller (Hawera) 6.4, v. M. Hurley (Alton) 6.5; three 2min. rounds. —Both good youngsters, Hurley’s ringcraft causing Moller to mishit on several occasions. Moller had Hurley covering up on the ropes with rights and lefts to head, Hurley coming out very groggy. Hurley came out fresh in the last round and gave a good exhibition of boxing, connecting with rights to the face. The decision was a draw. A. O’Neill (Wanganui) 10.3, v. D. Coughlan (Manawatu) 9.9; four 2min. rounds.—O’Neill had the advantage of weight and forced Coughlan to the ropes, where he took punishment from O’Neill’s hard lefts. Coughlan. in the second round, had again to take punishment on the ropes but connected with left to body in the open fighting. Coughlan kept O’Neill at a distance with straight lefts in the latter part of the fight but O’Neil! had too much leeway in points for Coughlan to catch up. O’Neill’s fight. Copestake (Stratford) 9.5, v. L. Nichols (Otakehe) 9.9; three 2min. rounds.— Nichols wasted a lot of energy chasing round the ring, Copestake being content to let Nichols do the forcing. Both boys mixed it well in the second round, Copestake scoring with straight lefts to face and ' bodys. Nichols forced fight in the last round, Copestake gamely fighting back, but Nichols’ advantageous reach enabled him to penetrate Copestake’s guard. Nichols was the winner on points. F. Moyes (Stratford) 11.4, v. L. Jones (Wanganui) 11.2; three 2min., rounds.—Jones had advantage of reach, Moyes’ footwork keeping him out of danger. Jones connected with right to face, Moyes coming back with hard lefts to body. In the early part of last round Jones connected with a beautiful right swing to the jaw, Moyes going down for the full count.

P. Huzziff (Eltham) 9.7, v. R. Brereton (New Plymouth) 9.12; three 2min. rounds.—Both boys showed good knowledge of the game, each connecting with straight lefts to face. Brereton dropped Huzziff for four in the second round. Last round Huzziff fought well, hitting hard body blows. The referee gave a draw. C. Ford (Manawatu) 11.0, v. K. Fitzwater (Wellington) 10.12; six 2min. rounds.—Each man fought a careful fight, both using lefts to body and face. Fitzwater took fight to Ford, forcing him to cover up. Fitzwater (Patea), 9.6; six 2min. rounds.— It was announced before this bout that it would be Fitzwater's last amateur fight, as ho intended turning professional immediately. O'Neill took the fight, to Fitzwater, putting him down with a right to the face for six. Fitzwater came up and connected with hard lefts and rights to the body. O’Neil 1 bored in. causing Fitzwater to (’over up. Fitzwater was again down for four in the second round from a right to the jaw and again for six also from a right. The beginning of the third round saw Fitzwater down for seven from O'Neill’s hard right. Fitzwater fought better in the fourth round, using his long reach to advantage and keeping O’Neil at length. Some good toe-to-toe fighting was seen in the next round, both boys connecting with hard rights. Last round and both boys fought a hard round, each dealing out punishment. O’Neill had too much of a leeway of points in the first three rounds and cot the decision on points.
