ENGINE DRIVERS’ HOURS
HUMAN ELEMENT IN ACCIDENTS
[ Per Press Association. ]
DUNEDIN, April 11
Serious alarm over the long working hours is felt by railway drivers and firemen. A meeting of the local branch of the Engine Drivers, Firemen and Cleaners’ Association adopted a resolution at a meeting yesterday expressing dissatisfaction. This resolution is going forward 4o the Wellington Executive. The meeting was largely attended. It is understood that the procession of train accidents this year was discussed before the resolution was unanimously passed. A reporter was informed that many drivers have worked a 50-hour week since Christmas. Such conditions arc alleged to be uniform throughout the Dominion, and the human clement in relation to the safety factor is considered thus to be weakened.
