KANGIWAHIA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The annual meeting of the W.I. was held on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Guthrie presiding over a good attendance. One new member, Mrs. H. S. Harris, was welcomed. ' n apology for absence was received from Mrs. F. Bielski. A short talk on the "Ode to Friendship” was given by Mrs. Guthrie. Notice was received of the annual federation meeting to be held in April. It. was decided that this institute, with mucn plasure, nominate Mrs. Guthrie for a member of the Federation Council. Mesdames Boshier and J. H. Thompson were appointed deelgates to the council meeting. It was decided to send a letter of condolence to Mrs. McCorkindale, in her recent bereavement.

Mrs. S. H. Deihl presented a report on the group meetnig held at Utiwai recently. The secretary, Miss B. Sibbin, then presented the annual report, which showed . very progressive and full year’s work. The membership had been well maintained, as had the attendance at meetings. A wide variety of demonstration talks and competitions had been held at the monthly meetings during the year. The Drama, Arts and Crafts, and Garden Circles were all very well supported. The financial report also showed a very creditable year’s work, there being a credit balance of over eleven pounds. Both these reports were received and adopted, the secretary being commended on the excellent state of the institute, both financially and generally. Gifts of flowers were then given the president, Mrs. Guthrie, secretary, Miss Sibben, and Mrs. Boshier in appreciation of their services to the institute throughout the year. Mrs. Deihl, an ex-member, was also given a box of flowers, and extended a most cordial welcome. As there were only sufficient nominations for the committee an election was not necessary, the new committee being: Mesdames J. Thompson, W. Carr, C.. Reilly, D. Jones, D. Martin, J. Fraser, S. Deihl, A. Price, D. Thompson, W. Frankhauser, A. Maurice, R. H. Guthrie, and Misses B. Wood, B. Sibbin and A. McKenzie. Miss A. McKenzie was unanimously elected president (Mrs. Guthrie did not seek re-election). Mrs. Guthrie welcomed Miss McKenzie as president, and asked that members told what they knew of the support and help tht they had accorded her during her term of office. A very hearty vote of thanks to Ihe retiring president was passed with acclamation. In connection with the series of golden thread talks, several members told ./ht they knew of the native pigeon. Miss Collie will be in charge of the potato book for this year. Competition stewards will be Mesdames Jones and Brennall; trades table, Mesdames Billinghurst and W. Deihl; home and country, Miss V. Stent. Competition (weight guessing), Mrs. McDonald was the winner. Aster competition, Mrs. Reilly 1, Mrs. D. Wood 2, Mrs. G. W. Beard 3. For the April meeting members are to bring a sample of potatoes grown, also result of the weight grown. Competitions: Best utility apron, and a Madeira cake.

A very busy meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. METHODIST CHURCH ACTIVITIES. The March meeting of the Ladies’ Guild was well attended, Mrs. Coombridge presiding. Mrs. G. Fruman was welcomed as a new member, her small daughter being christened before the meeting. The readings for the day were much er joyed. Donations for the stall were a worked pillow case, a duster bag, and paper fish for pond. The competition winner was Mrs. Coombridge. A welcome back was extended Mrs. Blackler. Hostesses for next month are Mesdames Billinghurst and Hancock. All are reminded of the Harvest Festival evening to be held on March 28, at which there will be a fish pond, stall, competitions, gams and supper. A successful Harvest Festival social and sale was held in the Ruahine Hall last Monday evening. Mrs. Fred Billinghurst delighted all with her vocal items, a duet by Evelyn and Sylvia Blackler was also much enjoyed. Recitations were given by Evelyn Blackler, Noel and Lloyd Billinghurst. Much enjoyment was caused by a competition entitled “A Tennis Wedding,” Mr. N. Amadio being the winner. The bidding on the auction of harvest gifts was very brisk and a very creditable sum was netted as a result. Supper concluded a very pleasant evening. HORTICULTURAL SHOW. The result of guessing the weight of the fat cow at the recent show resulted in Mr. G. Hancox guessing the correct weight, 6021b5. VALEDICTORY. Members of the Anglican Church and friends gathered at the hall on Thursday afternoon to bid farewell to Rev. and Mrs. Watkins, who are leaving shortly for Wellington. There was a very good attendance, apologies being received from several others. Two competitions caused much amusement, the winners being: Telegram, Mrs. McDonald; tray of objects, Mrs. C. Smith. Mr. E. W. Pemberton, on behalf of those present, called upon Rev. and Mrs. Watkins to accept a handsome cheque as a small token of the esteem in which they were held. Mr. Pemberton expressed the sentiments of all present, when he expressed keen regret at losing Mr. and Mrs. Watkins. Rev. Watkins suitably returned thanks in his most entertaining manner. Afternoon tea brought a pleasant afternoon to a close. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB. Mr. W. Couper presided over a very good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Young Farmers’ Club on Tuesday evening. Mr. A. Lawson (Kimbolton) gave a resume of a meeting of the representative committee held at st on North recently. He also outfitted the proposed educational tour to be held next. May, and urged as many members as possible to ge. The cost would be very reasonable and the tour would afford a splendid opportunity of seeing most of the country in the North Island. Mr. Lawson’s remarks drew quite a good discussion and he was accord-

ed a very hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Mr. S. Thompson. The second speaker was Mr. T. L. Seddon, of Feilding, who gave a most, interesting and instructive talk on “The Farmer and the Law.” Quite a number of members of the Farmers’ Union ware present to listen to this talk and the speaker was accorded a very attentive hearing. The results of the calf judging are now to hand and are as follow: D. Evan 1, J. T. Boshier 2, R. Booker 3. R. Hancock v.h.c. The judge commented very favourably on the entries, which he said were of a high standard. There was very little betewen the first three placed GOLF CLUB. The annual meeting of the club was held on Tuesday evening, lhe attendance promising well for the coming season. The club had had a very good year last year and financially were in a sound position, having a credit balance of over £ll. It is proposed to expend some of this sum on painting the clubhouse. Officers elected for the coming year were: Patron, Mr. J. Watt; pre-; sicient, Mr. M. Saywell; secretary, Mr. T. Morgan; club captain, Mr. D. Jones; handicappers, Messrs. H. Fankhauser and D. Jones; general committee, Messrs. S. A. Meads, N. Saywell, D. Jones, J. Morgan, A. Tompkins and T. Morgan; auditor, Mr. P. E. Jewell. The ladies’ committee has yet to meet. Their executive will be tneiv club captain and secretary. The subscriptions were left the

same as last year, viz.; M*n, £1 ss; ladies, 12s. It was decided to affiliate with the Golf Union once again.
