JAPANESE REPELLED
BITTER RESISTANCE Received March 20, 5.5 p.m. HANKOW, March 13. Six thousand Japanese, bitterly resisted by the Chinese, have not succeeded in encircling Tenghsien. Other Japanese efforts to capture villages east of the Yi River failed. The Japanese have retreated from Maotsintu and Pinglu on the north bank of the Yellow River. DRIVE RESUMED. Received March 20, 5.5 p.m. PEKING, March 19. The Japanese have resumed their drive down the Tientsin railway on Suchow and are advancing from Lingchan. They are also battering Linyi.
