ROWING

WANGANUI CLUB Fl I ZHEKBERT FOURS The final of the annual Fitzherbert Fours race was held yesterday morning, when the best finish of the season was witnessed. With a fast tide running in, the two crews, stroked by R. Goldstone and M. Breed, respectively, raced upstream. Breed's crew drew away soon after the start and at the power station wharf had about a length and a-half lead, which they maintained until they were* at the gasworks wharf. Here Goldstone’s crew sprinted and gradually decreased the lead until opposite the Braeburn Hotel they were only hair a length behind. Both crews then began putting on the weight and Goldstone’s crew still closing up on Breed’s crew until fifty yards from the finish. Breed then called for more weight and both crews raced neck and neck to the finishing line, where Goldstone, getting in an extra stroke, managed to cross the line two feet ahead of the other crew. The crews were as follows: R. Goldstone (str.), H. Robertshaws (3), W. Northover (2), G. Clay (bow). M. Breed (str.), R. Ross (3), b. Goldsbury (2), A. Graham (bow).
