EXPORT OF BUTTER

DISCARDING SARANAC BOX. WAIKATO FARMERS PROTEST. HAMILTON, March 16. the scrapping of saranac butter boxes in favour of a new sub-standard box was the subject of a discussion opened by Mr. F. Siefert, chairman of directors of the Morrinsville Dairy Company, at a conference of dairy companies convened by the South Auckland Dairy Association held in Hamilton to-day, Mr. Siefert contended that before the saranac type of box was discarded a thorough invesigation of the position should be carried out. The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee Martin, announced recently that in order that the contents might be better protected butter for export on and after August 1 must be packed in a sub-standard box. The Minister said it had been found that the saranac type of box let in dirt and dust, causing Joss, and was not sufficient protection against mould growth. As far as the Morrinsville Dairy Company was concerned there had been very few complaints about butter exported in saranac boxes, Mr. Siefert said. ‘At present we do not know whether we are to get a better or a worse type of box and I think the position should be made clear to us," he added. “If the saranac box is discarded hundreds of pounds worth of machinery will become useless.” ‘‘lt seems to me that the South Auckland Dairy Association has been slighted,” commented Mr. J. L. Faulkner, secretary of the Morrinsville Dairy Company. ‘‘l think that the recent reply we received for information, was evasive. The Marketing Division should have forwarded us the information we asked for.” Mr. Siefert then put forward a motion that the conference enter a protest to the Government Marketing Division against the decision to discontinue the use of the saranac butter box. It was carried unanimously.
