HARRIER RUNNING

WANGANUI CLUB I ; SEASON IN RETROSPECT. , Reviewing the Wanganui ilarrie; Club, 13th. anual report compiled by the secretary, Mr. J. Can, it is obvious that the dub, all things taken into consideration, last season experienced a most successful season. The report states, inter alia:— “The membership was not up to the average of past seasons owing, perhaps, to the severe loss suffered by the club early in the present season. Three valued members who left were Messrs. C. Weller, A. Bourgeois, ana A. Bevege, who were transferred to other centres. It is worthy of note that these runners added considerable strength to the clubs which they joined in other centres. “The club is greatly indebted to various donors of trophies during the 1937 season, and to these loyal supporters the dub extends their hearty thanks. To Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Yo’ang we wish both health and happiness for many days to come. Their generosity and kindnesses will always be remembered by the club. Sinceie thanks are extended to the following ladies and gentlemen who, during the season have invited the club to run from their residences: Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Young, Mr. and Mrs. A. Clark, Mr. ‘ and Mrs. B. S. Kench and Mr. and I Mrs. W. J. Carr. Also deserving of special mention are those who have billeted visiting harriers competing in inter-dub events. “Harriers depend solely upon property owners for their courses, and to the following the dub is greatly indebted, Wanganui Rugby Union, Intermediate School Union Boat Club, Aramoho Boat Club, Cycling Club, Cricket Association, City Council. Wanganui Jockey Club (for loan of the Racecourse on several occasions), and many others. During the year the club held sever'd dances, in conjunction with the Aramoho Boat Club, and these proved sucecssful, providing a small profit financially. Worthy of praise also are the ladies who gave valuable assistance with suppers at the dances during the season. “eWst Coast Championships.— Owing to unforseen circumstances the dub were unable to send an A team to compete in the West Coast Championships, but were represented by a “B” grade team (G. Hallam, F. Kiddle, S. Willetts, R. Gilbertson), who received the B grade honours. “New Zealand Cross Country Championships.—The championships were held at Timaru, and although the club, for the first time for several years was not represented. C. Weller and ex-Wanganui harrier secured the championship. The personnel of the team representing the West Coast was: C. Weller, M. Griffin, F. Hill, W. Edge, D. Smith, L. Smith. To these runners the dub extends its congratulations, and wish them ail the success in the 1938 season.

During the pase season the sport was introduced at the Wanganui Technical College, with runners numbering about 20. Members of the Technical College Harriers were guests of the club at several runs and afternoon tea during the 1937 season. Trophy Races and Inter-club Races. The Benson ‘Trophy.—For the eleventh year this trophy was contested for in the usual sporting spirit. The Wanganui Club regained the trophy by a good margin of points. Mr. and Mrs. Benson also donated individual trophies. “The Bramwell Trophy.—The race for the much coveted Bramwell Memorial trophy was again held from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. L. Young, and after a fast and interesting race, a team captained by A. Pemberthy carried off the honours. “The Burt Trophy.—This year 15 members made the trip and a great irace ensued, ending in a draw, the I trophy being held by both clubs for six months each. “Marton-Wanganui Relay Race.— The club entered three teams, an “A” team and two “B” teams.
