Meteorological Office, Wellington, Thursday, Jan. 27, 3 p.m. General Situation.—An anti-cyclone of rather slight intensity is crossing the Dominion to-day, while a deep westerly depression covers south-eastern Australia and the western Tasman Sea and is moving eastwards. Forecast.—Winds: Variable at first in the Cook Strait area, otherwise north-easterly to northerly prevailing, later backing to northwesterly, force light to moderate, but gradually freshening sputh of New Plymouth and Castlepoint. Seas (New Zealand waters): A considerable but decreasing southerly swell on the east coast of the North Island, elsewhere slight to moderate but later rising in the Cook and Foveaux Straits areas. Eastern Tasman Sea: Light to moderate northeast ‘o northerly winds in the northern portion with slight to moderate seas; freshening north-westerlies and rising seas in the southern portion. Weather: Fair to fine generally at first but unsettled conditions and scattered rains developing to-morrow in Westland and the far South and later extending to most districts with a westerly aspect Temperatures rising.
