RACE TO HOSPITAL

DARWIN MAN’S FORTITUDE DARWIN, Jan. 16. The fortitude of men bred in the Northern Territory was shown again this week when Maxwell McMillan almost lost his hand, eight miles from Darwin. McMillan, who is a director of the Darwin Ice and Cold Storage Co., fell through the glass window of a farmhouse. His left hand was almost severed. With no help available, the injured man applied a tourniquet with strips from his shirt. He then drove to the Darwin Hospital in a motor truck over a winding, boggy track. He was barely conscious when he reached the hospital. He was lifted from the car to the operating table, and his life was saved with only minutes to spare.

Yesterday he was put on board the Merkur, bound for Brisbane, where he will receive attention from a specialist.
