FOLLOWER OF TE KOOTI
MRS. MIHINUI MEIHANA DEATH OCCURS AT PAROA WHAKATANE, Dec. 21. Another link with the Maori rebel chief, Te Kooti, was severed with the death at Paroa ot Mrs. Mihinui Meihana, at the age of 79 years. Born in the Bay of Plenty, a member ot the Ngati Rangihori sub-tribe of the Ngatiawa tribe, she spent the whole of her life in these parts. Her parents were followers of Te Kooti and as a young girl Mihmui Meihana often followed the war chief’s raiding parties as one of the two nurses who usually travelled with the fighting men. When hostilities ceased she married the late Mr. Charles Mason, who became a chief of his tribe, and she came to Whakatane, living here with her husband until the time of his death. Her only son, Martin, resides at Wanganui. More than 600 natives from all parts of the East Coast, Rotorua, Taupo, and Tauranga, attended the tangi at Paroa. The burial took place at the Paroa native cemetery.
