Constable C. L. Bourke arrived in Wanganui on Tuesday from Wellington on transfer.

Mr R. O. Montgomerie, of Kakatahi, left for Wellington yesterday afternoon.

Mr J. Flood (Lyttelton), president of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr C. Fraser (Greymouth), vice-president, and Mr J. Roberts (Wellington), general secretary, are visiting Wanganui.

Messrs Hope Gibbons and A. R. Donaldson, trustees of the local health camp, are visiting Wellington to take part in a conference of healtn camp associations, which is being held at Parliamentary Buildings to-day.

Mr. N. S. Falla; managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company, left England on November 3 by the Normandie for New York. He intended to connect with the Niagara, arriving at Auckland on December 13.

Dr. Cyril Jenkins, the Welsh composer, who adjudicated at the Wellington competitions in 1934, was a round-trip passenger by the Strathmore, which called at Wellington on Monday. He is now a resident of Melbourne.

Mr. A. W. Packard, a senior member of the literary staff of the Press, and formerly a member of the Evening Post staff, has been appointed chief-of-staff of the Press, in succession to Mr. C. H. Williams, who has resigned to take up the position of editor of the Hawke's Bay Daily Mail.

Constable R. Fletcher, who has been senior Parliamentary police officer for nearly six years, is leaving Wellington on transfer to Hawera after spending nearly 10 years with the Wellington police force. Constable Fletcher has been a prominent member of the Police Pipe Band at Wellington.

Mr Harry M. Warner, president of Warner Bros.-First National Pictures, is expected to arrive at Auckland in the Mariposa on December 24. Mr Warner will continue his voyage to Sydney. He has been contemplating an Australian visit for the last two years, his reason being that the Antipodes are the only part of the world in which Warner Bros, films are distributed that has remained unvisited by the American executive.

The absence of the familiar figure of Mr. T. W. Howie (Fordell) on account of ill health was referred to by Mr. A. P. Melville at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union. Mr. Melville said that Mr. Howie was regarded as the grand old gentleman of the executive and was easily the oldest member of the Fordell branch. It was Mr. Howie who persuaded him to join up with the union and he had never regretted the day he had taken this advice to heart. Kindly references to Mr. Howie's ability and keenness as a member of the union were made by the president (Mr. T. Currie) and Mr. W. Morrison. It was decided to forward a letter to Mr. Howie expressing the union's synL pathy with him in his illness and expressing the hope that he would soon be back at the meetings again.

Mr. J. T. Dunlop, accountant of the Post Office Money Order branch at Wanganui, who is leaving on promotion to Christchurch, was farewelled at a gatheringof the staff last evening when he was presented with a leather suitcase and Mrs. Dunlop with a hatbox. The chief postmaster, Mr. G. Nelson, in making the presentation, eulogised the work Mr. Dunlop had done and the close friendships he had made in the comparatively short time he had been in Wanganui. Mr. Nelson said that his close co-operation with other members of the staff had been appreciated, and that they all regretted losing such a popular man. Other speakers were Messrs. C. A. Condie, A. Congelton, W. Cook, Strang and T. Fields. In conclusion, Mr. Cooper said a few words of welcome on behalf of the new accountant, Mr. H. J. Sanders, of Wellington, who is to take up his new position rL day.
