MISHAP IN HARBOUR

LEANDER’S AMPHIBIAN

[ Per Press Association. 1 WELLINGTON, Nov. 24.

The Leander’s amphibian had been at Rongotai ’drome for testing and overhaul purposes and was returning to the ship when an accident occurred.

The pilot was Lieut. G. W. RNicholls, and two R.A.F. ratings were in the machine. The only damage was that to the upper wing, which was torn a trifle in the crash. A launch of the Leander was standing by in case of emergency and rushed to the upturned machine, while further assistance was forthcoming from a naval cutter some distance out for tia’r.ing purposes.

The amphibian, on striking the water, first nosed in and then tilted backwards quite slowly, enabling the occupants to climb out without difficulty. They were taken to the shlo in the launch, which returned with a leading rope from a hoist. A launch from the Achilles lent a hand in securing this to the ’plane, which was pulled to the ship's side and g>t aboard at noon.
