PIPE BANDS

N.Z. CONTEST JUDGES APPOINTED WELLINGTON, Nov. 24. Judges for the pipe band contest, to take place at Masterton on February 12, were appointed at a meeting of the executive of the WellingtonHawke’s Bay Pipe Band Centre Messrs. C. Stewart (Ruahine Pipe Band), in the chair, J. W. Brown (Nelson Pipe Band), W. Allan (Manawatu Scottish Society’s Pipe Band). Pipe-Major C. Stewart (Wellington Caledonian Society’s Pipe Band), Pipe-Sergeant W. Smith (Hunterville Pipe Band), lan Cameron (Wairarapa High School Pipe Band), Miss Hylton (Motueka Ladies’ Pipe Band), and Mr. M. Gray Nasmith (secretary) were present. It was resolved that the centre contest should lake place at Mastertoil on February 12, 1938. The event would be held in the Cameron and Soldiers’ Memorial Park.

Pipe-Major S. Clothier, of Hamilton, was appointed judge of music, the other oiiicials to be as follows; — Military judges, Captain G. McCaskill, N.Z.S.C., Staff Sergeant-Major C. E. Rogers (Masterton), Staff SergeantMajor G. P. O’Leary (Trentnam); dress and instruments, Mr. A. McGowan (Eketahuna); supervisors Messrs. R. McKenzie and J. Henderson; marshal, Major J. W. Bird; timekeepers, Messrs. L. C. Nicol and D. A. Pickering. Mr. Cameron reported on the arrangements for the contest being made by the Masterton committee. This committee comprised the Mayor of Masterton, Mr. Jordan, representatives of the Borough Council, County Council, the business community, Wairarapa Caledonian Society, St. Andrew’s Society, and the Wairarapa High School Pipe Band. The contest would be the first of the kind to be held at Wairarapa. Several hands in the centre had already announced their intention of competing and the entry gave promise of being a record for the gathering. The Highland Pipe Bands’ Association of New Zealand intimated that contest regulations were in course of revision. The centre’s remit, rescindtion to prevent the noiciing of a cemtre contest within three months of a Dominion contest, had been carried. The balance or kick-step would be permitted in the quickstep, no advantage or disadvantage in points -being allowed.
