THE PRIME MINISTER

LIFE-SIZE PORTRAIT PRESENTED TO AUCKLAND LABOUR CLUB [ Per press Astcdation. I AUCKLAND, Nov. 22. A life-size portrait of the Prime Minister, for the painting of which au English artist, Mr C. H. H. Berry, was commissioned during Mr Savage’s recent visit to Great Britain, was presented to the Auckland Labour Club to-night by the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis. The president of the club, Mi J. T. Jennings, welcomed Sir Ernest and also the Minister of Labour, Hon. H. T. Armstrong, who thanked the Mayor for his gift. It is proposed by the club executive to present the portrait, after 12 months, to the National Art Gallery, a course approved to-night by Sir Ernest. Mr Armstrong thanked Sir Ernest Davis for the gift on behalf of the Prime Minister and said that Mr Savage had undoubtedly won a place as one of the greatest leaders New Zealand had known. In the short space of time that it had been in office the Government had at least accomplished something in the interests of the people. It had also set the world talking about New Zealand, as Mr Armstrong had learned when he was in Europe recently. He thought the Government had done as much for the people as any other section of the working-class movement in the world and it would -achieve even greater .things if given the opportunity.
