HOUSING SCHEME
PROVISION OF EMPLOYMENT CLAIMS OF MINISTER 1 Per Press Association. 1 WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. Figures showing the amount of employment provided through the operations of the Government's housing scheme were given by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary in Charge of Housing, Hon. J. A. Lee, this evening. He said that on August 20 the total number of men engaged in housing construction was about 1400, to which could be added another 1400 indirectly employed in the preparation of material. By September 17, added Mr. Lee, the number employed was 1600, with probably another 1600 engaged in preparing material. The latest return, for November 12, shows 2500 directly employed, so that in all probability the operations of the Housing Department are giving gainful employment to no fewer Than 5000 people. The numbers employed are advancing steeply now and building is actually proceeding in 27 towns and the number of houses advertised as at November 12 was 2011.
