WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT RATA The Silverhope Women’s Institute held their usual monthly meeting in the Silverhope School on Wednesday, November 10, a fair attendance of members being present. The meeting opened with the “Smile Song” and “Creed.” The president, Mrs. A. N. Bartlett, then extended a welcome to those in attendance. After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read and passed, Mrs. Aidworth gave her report on the council meeting at Westmere, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. It was decided that the next meeting would be held in conjunction with the children’s Xmas party on the second Saturday in December in Mr. Aidworth’s paddock on the corner of Aidworth Road and Main Road if the weather permits, or in the Rata Hall if raining. An amusing musical competition, arranged by Mrs. Aidworth, was won by Mrs. Green, while Mrs. McKnight was the lucky winner of the d'oyley competition. Other competition resulted:—Premier bloom: Mrs. Kilmister 1, Mrs. Signal 2, Mrs. Roper 3. Best dressed doll: Mrs. Aidworth 1. After members had been refreshed by the “cup that cheers,” Mrs. Roper gave a fascinating demonstration on ! “hairpin” work which was much aopreciated by all present. The singing ci the National Anthem brought a very happy afternoon to a close. FORDELL NOVEMBER MEETING The November meeting of the Fordell Women’s Institute was held in the Public Hall on Tuesday 16th, Mrs. Lee presiding. A special welcome was given to Mrs. Brine, voluntary organiser, who gave an instructive address on institute matters. A pretty posy was presented to Mrs. Brine and a bunch of roses was given to Mrs. Millen whom members were also pleased to welcome. A report o( the half-yearly council meeting held at Westmere was given by Miss J. Christie. Votes of thanks were accorded Mrs. Askew for her work in connection with the sale of disabled soldiers’ work and Miss Hall for donation of prize cards for monthly competition. The demonstrations given during the afternoon were tatting by Mrs. Burgess and smocking- by Mrs. Robinson. Votes of thanks to these ladies, proposed by Mrs. Dale, were carried with applause. Mrs. Brine and Miss Askew tied as winners of the song title competition. Results of monthly competitions were:—Two buttonholes (worked): Miss N. Christie 1, Mrs. R. Campbell 2, Miss Barnes 3. Three pansies: Miss Tilley 1, Mrs. Lee 2, Mrs. Christie 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Nisbet, Rowan, Flyger, Kingston and Miss Flyger. The meeting closed with the National Anthem. All members are asked to bring “a plate” to the December meeting.
