SCHOOL CONCERT
PAPANUI JUNCTION The pupils of the Papanui Junction School held, a concert in the Papanui Hall on Saturday last in the presence of an appreciative audience. An excellent programme was presented by the pupils, assisted by the local talent, making an evening’s entertainment that, indeed, was a credit to all concerned. The stage was artistically decorated with flowers and shrubs, and made a pleasing setting for the various items. The programme was as follows: “God Defend New Zealand,” sung by the school; recitation, “Vespers,” presented by Ann Price; a tableau, “When its Lamplighting Time in the Valley,” a very pretty item by the pupils with Miss P. Revell taking the part of mother; “Love’s Old Sweet Song,” sung by Miss Allen; Schubert’s Cradle Song, sweetly sung by Ann Price, Ethel Wilson, Margaret Collyer, and Maggie Howie; “He Did,” a musical monologue presented by Mrs. Collyer, in her usual artistic manner; tableau, “Hearts and Flowers,” prettily danced and sung by R. and N. Martin, Ann Price, Ethel Wilson, Ann Marie, Cliff Collyer, and Maggie Howie; sea shanties, by the school; pianoforte solo, “Agitatian,” Mrs. A. R. Ferguson; songs, “The Blind Ploughman” and “Trees,” sung by Miss Howie; a character duet, “1 don’t want to play in your yard,” cleverly performed by Margaret Collyer and Maggie Howie, was a feature of the evening; song, “Ye Banks and Braes,” by the school. Accompanists for the concert were Mesdaijes Collyer and Howie. Much credit is due to Miss B. Revell for the organisation of the concert, and to Miss Scott for her assistance in helping to train the children. A feature of the evening, from the children’s point of view, was a sumptuous supper with delicious fruit salad, kindly donated by Mrs. H. H. Harris, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks by the children, and the presentation of a posy by Margaret Collyer, for which Mrs. Harris offered ,her thank*. The rest of the evening was spent :in a jolly dance, music being sup-, ; plied by Mesdames Collyer and i Howie, Miss Pohe, Mr. J. Pohe and ; party. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss D. Davis and partner, and the “lucky spot” by Miss Scott and partner. Dancing continued till a late hour. Mr. C. McMahon made a very efficient M.C. The cake-guess-ing was won by Mr. B. Rae. The proceeds of the evening went towards the school prize fund, and many thanks are due to all those who helped to make the evening such a success.
