COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS’ DINNER A TOAST TO A HOST In proposing the toast of the “Host and Hostess” at the second annual dinner of the Main Trunk Commercial Travellers, held at the Gretna Hotel on Monday evening, Mr. Eric Eden (Wanganui) expressed pleasure at the privilege of being entrusted with such an important toast. He said that Mr. and Mrs. Quirk had gone out of their way to make the C.T.’s comfortable in what was a home away from home, and the “boys on the road” appreciated more than mere words could express the kindness and hospitality which they had at all times received from the host and hostess of the Gretna.

The speaker went on to thank Mr. and Mrs. Quirk for the important part that they had played in making the function held that evening a success, and he hoped that another dinner would be held next year. “I cannot say that I am too full for words, but I think that the feelings of all commercial travellers who have enjoyed the hospitality of the Gretna can best be expressed in the following toast to the host and hostess: “A health to you and wealth to you, And the best that life can give to you. May fortune still be kind to you And happiness be true to you, And life be long and good to you Is the toast of all your friends to you.” In responding, Mr. Quirk said that Mrs. Quirk and he considered it a great honour to be the guests of the C.T.’s and wished to express their heartfelt thanks to those responsible for the organisation of the dinner. “We appreciate very much indeed the spirit that prompted this function, which is the second of its kind to be held here. It shows that our efforts to make the commercial travellers feel at home have been appre-. ciated. As the days go by, and the| years roll on, I will never forget the' laying of the foundation stone of the 1 Gretna by the C.T.’s in November of last year. That occasion was the proudest moment of my life and will always remain a pleasant memory. We always do our utmost to make the commercial travellers feel at home and make their life a happier one. We couldn’t hold a function of this kind without the loyal co-opera-tion of the staff and I wish to thank them for their willing help,” concluded Mr. Quirk, amidst applause. GENERAL NEWS A laUgh was raised at the commercial travellers’ dinner at the Gretna Hotel on Monday evening, when one C.T. who was about to sing a song told the audience that he had bet his wife £1 to a pair of gloves that he would be encored, and consequently he implored his fellow “knights of the road” to applaud most heartily and ask- for more, so that he could win his bet. THE MAJESTIC “THE TENTH MAN” AND “HEIR TO TROUBLE” “The Tenth Man” is a dramatic story of high finance, with John Lodge giving a virile and forceful study as the self-made man, juggling in millions. Directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, it is a worthy follow up to that director’s great hit, “Ourselves Alone.” “Heir to Trouble,” featuring Ken Maynard, daredevil star and king of cowboys, will be screened with “The Tenth Man,” at the Majestic to-mor-row. This new thriller relates the serio-comic adventures of a young ranger who falls heir to a gold mine, a baby—and trouble, trouble, trouble. Joan Perry, Harry Woods and Fern Emmett have the leading featured roles under the direction of Spencer Gordon Bennet. GENERAL NEWS A first offending inebriate appeared before Messrs H. Johnston and E. J. Price, J’s.P., at the Taihape Magistrate’s Court yesterday and was convicted and discharged. He consented to take out a prohibition order for 12 months. Sergeant Mcßae said that defendant had been hanging round the town drinking for the past three weeks, during which time he had spent no less than £37. Accused had been living at the rate of £6OO a year for the past three weeks and now had only threepence left.
