SOLDIER SETTLERS
STANDARD OF LIVING INVERCARGILL PROTEST i Per Press Association. ] INVERCARGILL, Nov. 19. At a meeting of returned soldier settlers in Invercargill to-day, some of those present said the standard of living of soldier settlers was lower than that of any other man in the country. “Not only is the returned man suffering, but his wife and children are suffering also, and we should do something to alter these conditions,” said one speaker. “A man should be able to make enough out of his farm without his wife having to be a slave, as she very often is now. Jt is time something was done in the matter.”
It was unanimously decided to forward a recommendation to the Dominion Council of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association that the Government be asked to consider granting each soldier settler a subsidy on his production. This, it was stated, would provide compensation for the disabilities men were now suffering because of their war service and would also tend to promote greater efficiency on the farms.
