ON AWAPUNI TRACKS

THE LEVIN CANDIDATES YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS (Special to “Chronicle.") PALMERSTON N., Oct. 18. With Awapuni stables well represented at Levin, and other horses having their final flutters before leaving for Te Rapa, there was plenty of interesting work this morning. The plough was in great demand, Wednesday’s heavy showers had little or no effect on the course proper, which was hard. The morning was dull and cold and over the last three furlongs th*, horses had to battle against a fairly strong breeze which slowed most of them up considerably. There were a number of good gallops before the breakfast interval, and among the best of them were those of The Buzzej, Tail Light, and Wild Flower. The Buzzer Pleases The Buzzer (W. J. Broughton) was sprinted seven furlongs on the plough and after an easy first furlong he was nicely balanced, cutting out the first two in 27. He put five furlongs behind in 1.7, and completed the full distance in 1.33 4-5 without being asked to do his best at any stage. He pulled up well and he snould strip a very lit horse at Levin. Oratory, Laughing Lass, Rangemore, Noisy Nignt, The Bigot, Taumau, Conveyer, Old Surrey, Baicelona, Alby, whose next race will probably be at Woodville, The Crooner and Shining Hours were given easy tasks. The Crooner looks to be in great nick after his races at Riccarton. Great Hope (Broughton) and Silver River (G. R. Tattersail) were companions over six furlongs, and the pace was on all through. Great Hope, beginning very quickly, set the pace and the first three furlongs were put behind in better than 38. They were against the wind for the rest of the journey, taking 52 for the half-mile, and they completed in 1.19, Silver River making up some ground over the last bit. it was a very nice gallop. Gay Boy (S. Anderson) was sprinted five furlongs on his own. He broke 26 for the first two and reached the post in 1.6 2-5, being permitted to make his own pace over the last two furlongs. He looks very well. Copy Cat (Tattersall) was galloped with Royal Choice (I. Howe) ana it was a six-furlong flutter. Copy Cat began very quickly, running lhe first three in 37. Then Royal Cnoice went to the front and although he was slowing up over the last hundred yards he beat Copy Cat by the best part of a length, the time for the full distance being 1.20. Aria (Broughton) scampered over five furlongs in 1.6 4-5, the first two in 24 4-5, and Beaulack (Howe) covered five furlongs on the course proper in 1.5 1-5, the first two in 25 1-5. Beaulack went better than on Tuesday. Orient Dawn (Broughton) was given an easy seven furlongs on the plough, taking 1.10 for the last five. Round Score was schooled by W. J. McDowell, jumping three fences in good style.

Cher Ami (J. Leach) sprinted three furlongs on the course proper in 41, and Merry Ruler (Howe) required 1.5 for five furlongs, also on the course proper. Sporting Luck (N. Voitre) and Sporting Gift (Leach) were another Pair to gallop on the course proper, and Sporting Gift finished in front in 53 4-5. Laughing Chief in Front Bodyline (Anderson) and Laughing Chief (Broughton) were companions over six furlongs on the plough and after the termer had made the pace to the straight Laughing Chief went past him to finish in 1.21 1-5, the last five having taken 1.7. Tangled, who with Tail Light left for Te Rapa later in the day, was put over two orush fences by W. J. McDowell, and he than ran six furlongs on the plough in 1.25. He looks a picture at present and he should prove capable of giving a good account of himself at Te Rapa. Dawning Light covered six furlongs in 1.21, the last five in 1.7 3-5, and she was coasting along very smoothly at the finish. Mon Ace (Tattersall) was no good to Lady Ina (C. W. France) over six furlongs which to*'; her 1.23. Hirangi (Williamson) showed a rare turn of speed in a six furlong flutter, the last five of which took 1.4 i. King’s Lancer (McDowell) and Aurora’s Love (C. Thomson) were given a round over the schooling hurdles, but their jumping was rather slow. Chat (H. Johnston) moved nicely throughout a six furlong task on the plough, not being troubled to record 1.20 for the full distance. Tail Light (Leach) and Wild Flower (Tattersall) were galloped seven furlongs and after running the first four in 51, and five in 1.5, they finished almost on terms in 1.33, neither being ridden out. Merryman (Johnston) and Wagner (Broughton) followed in a half-mile task and after running the first furlong in 12 2-5 they broke 52 for the full distance. Merryman appeared a trifle sore in front when he pulled up. Except where specially mentioned, the above gallops were on the plough. Additional riding engagements for Levin are as follows: S. Anderson.—Gay Boy, Laughing Chief, Hunting Spy, Son and Heir, and Royal Romance. J. Leach—Sporting Gift and Conversion. I. Howe.—Beaulack. CHANGE OF FORTUNE MICHAEL BEARY’S STORY Lord Glanely, the millionaire English owner, has appointed Michaei Beary to be his first jockey for next season. Behind this announcement lies a remarkable story of a man whose luck has turned (says the Daily Express). Less than a year ago, Beary complained: “For two years I have been under a cloud. There's something wrong with Beary. Trainers, when I asked them for mounts, have made excuses.” At that time his petition in bankruptcy was filed. Even then he had fought his way back, was once again a crack jockey. But, in his own words, “it was too late to catch up financially.” This year the luck changed in startling fashion. In January he married slim, graceful Eve Herbert. In April he was granted

his bankruptcy discharge. And in June he won the Derby on Mrs Miller’s Mid-day Sun. He is riding better this season than he has ever ridden, and with half the term over he i had had fifty successes.
