GENERAL NEWS An old resident of Moawhango told a “Chronicle” representative yesterday that the torrential downpour of rain experienced in that district on Monday afternoon was the heaviest •within memory. The rain simply came down in bucketsful. I have never seen anything like it,” declared the “Chronicle’s” informant, who added that the Moawhango River rose rapidly to the highest level on record. Heavy rain was experienced at Pap<tnui at the same time, but Taihape escaped without a drop though dark clouds loomed overhead. The long spell of fine weather broke at Taihape on Tuesday night and some particularly heavy showers occurred yesterday. The rain will have a beneficial effect upon gardens and pastures which have become parched of late.
