GREYHOUND RACING

SPRIGGENS PARK EVENT TO-DAY’S PROGRAMME For the second time in the history of Wanganui greyhound racing is making a bid for popularity. Last time, run by private enterprise, the meetings were marred by frequent breakdowns, but now, the Wanganui Greyhound Racing Club guarantees a smoothly running electrical plant, the most modern tin hare machine in New Zealand. Credit for the planning and building of this machine goes to Messrs. J. A. Palamountain and A. Cate, both of Wanganui. The sport itself is growing popular throughout New Zealand, mainly perhaps, because of the fact that so many races can be run in an afternoon. Today 20 races will be held between 1.30 and 5 p.m. four of which will be over hurdles. For those who have never seen a hurdie race this will be the chance o£ a life-time as some of the best jumpers in New Zealand will be present. To-day’s Nominations Maiden Stakes: Balgownie Queen, Mosquito Queen, Rangitiki Prideaway, Smiling Through, Dawn Patrol, ' Parker, Springbok, Laughing Lass and Miss King. Maiden Hurdles: Silver Hawk, Flying Tackle, Mosquito Queen, Micky Maid, Silver Ring. Tramway Stakes: Flying Tackle, Silver de Oro, Tukia, Blue Cobra, Flight Lieutenant, Slip’s Pride, Wait and See, Nosey Parker, Paketoi Magic, Springbok. Spriggens Park Stakes: Swagger Mick, Smoke Bellew, Slip's Pride, Mosquito Boy, The Monk, Silver de Oro, Miss King, Ginger Mick, Silver Hawk. Puriri Hurdles: Flying Tackle, Silver Hawk, Wait and Sec, Silver Ring, Mosquito Queen, Pukitoi Magic, Imlay Kid. Ladies’ Bracelet: Takia Blue Cobra, .Puketoi Magic, Mosquito Boy, Wait and See, Smoke Bellew, Balgownie I Queen, Swagger Mick, Silver de Oro, Ginger Mick, Slip’s Pride, Miss King, The Monk. Notes on Form Of the dogs in the Maiden Stakes, there are some that have not yet competed in an open meeting. They are: Smiling Through, Dawn Patrol, Nosey Parker, Springbok, Laughing Lass, and Miss King. All are showing excellent pace especially Miss King, Mosquito Queen, and Prideaway. In the Maiden Hurdles, Micky Maid, from Dannevirke, is an unknown

quantity. This race will probably go to Mosquito Queen (Wanganui) with Flying Tackle and Silver Ring close up. Silver de Oro, Flight Lieutenant and Puketoi Magic are dogs who acquitted themselves very well at the Dannevirke races last Labour Day. They should be favourites for the Tramway Stakes. The big race, the Spriggens Park Stakes, will be a contest between first class dogs that have been winning at all the recent race meetings. Swagger Mick, who was unbeaten in the first two years of his career has the inside running in the first heat. Smoke Bellew who has been termed the “Wizard of the U Track” will be running alongside him. Slip’s Pride, a Dannevirke dog, has been racing on a straight track, so it is not known how he will figure when he hits the bend. Mosquito Boy, a very fast local dog has a chance if he can keep to the inside fence . The Monk, perhaps the best of the local dogs, will make the pace hot, as he leaves the box like a shot from a gun. Silver de Oro, another straight track dog, has the right build for handling the bends and should give a good account of herself. Miss King, from Patea, is in good form but has not seen a U track. Ginger Mick, the Dannevirke champion, is guaranteed to be in at the finish. Silver Hawk another unknown quantity has yet to be proved. Puriri Hurdles: The winner of this race will have to run the distance twice and it is hard to say which nose will be first past the post. Puketoi Magic, winner of the big hurdle race at Dannevirke, is fast and jumping well, but he will have to do his best to beat Mosquito Queen and Wait and See.

Ladies’ Bracelet: Those who know or think they know the form of the dogs are picking The Monk to win this race but there will be several very close to him. Smoke Bellew, Mosquito Boy and Ginger Mick will chase him along. First and second trophies have been donated by keen sportsmen in and about Wanganui and as these are well worth racing for, even without the stake money, competition will be very keen.
