AMATEUR ATHLETICS TWILIGHT MEETING The first twilight meeting of the season was held on the Domain on Thursday under the auspices of the Taihape Amateur Athletic Club. The support received from the local runners and cyclists, and from the general public was most gratifying and there appears to be no doubt that the club will be able to carry on. All events were keenly contested and some good performances were registered. Detailed results are as under:— Running Events 75 Yards Handicap.—R. Spence 1, C. Doyle 2, J. Johnson 3. 880 Yards Handicap.—G. H. Morgan I. F. Connell 2, V. Robinson 3. Girls Under 12.—Elaine Edwards 1, J. Rowley 2. Bovs Under 12 Years.—S. Sinclair 1, K. Doyle 2. Cycling Events Half-mile Cycle Handicap.—E. Taylor 1, F. Graham 2, J. Guilhard 3. Three-mile Cycle.—J. Guilliard 1, F. Graham 2, E. Taylor 3. Boys’ Half-mile Cycle.—C. O’Hanlon 1, Murphy 2. The judges were Messrs H. Johnston, R. Finn, R. Kiely. Mr H. D. Bond acted as starter and Mr T. Auld as timekeeper. WEATHER NOTES The following weather notes for October have been kindly supplied by Mr A. R. Fannin, of Papakai Road, Taihape: Mean maximum temperature in shade, 57.6; mean minimum temperature in shade, 39.7; highest maximum temperature in shade, 68. b on 30th.; lowest minimum temperature in shade, 32.2 on 28th; mean minimum temperature on grass, 33.8; lowest temperature on grass, 24.2 on 28th.; mean earth temperature at 2ft., 52.0; rainfall, 1.87 in.; number of days with rain, 13; greatest rainfall in one day, 0.40 on 24th. The rainfall for this year to October 31, 25.75 in. The average rainfall for this period is 30.8 in. GENERAL NEWS Messrs H. Barrett and Co. are the successful tenderers for seven of the Government houses to be built in Taihape. Mr A. F. McKenzie has the contract for the remaining three houses.
