MARTON

GARDEN PARTY AT “ANN BANK." A garden party at “Ann Bank," Turakina, is an event which is always looked forward to with pleasurable anticipation by the public, as the gardens at Ann Bank are an ideal setting for such a function, the flower-beds usually being a blaze of colour against the young spring-green of the many native and English trees. On this particular occasion the fete will be held on Saturday, November 13, and the proceeds are in aid of the Presbyterian Church funds. There will be produce, meat'and cake stalls, and various competitions for the amusement of the patrons. The price of admission, which includes afternoon tea, is Is 6d for adults, and 6d for children. RANGITIKEI CRICKET. The following team will represent Marton in tneir match against riorewa XI to-day. L. Smith (captain), J. Opensnaw, S. A. McIndoe, R. shield, P. P. J. Coroallis, G. Lourie, H. Parkes, P. Williams, W. Ruston, D. McLennan, G. Birch, H. Kimpton 12th. man. THE CIVIC THEATRE. “THE GOOD EARTH.” “The Good Earth" comes from Metro - Goldwyn - Mayer, the same studio which gave us "San Francisco,” “Naughty Marietta,” “Romeo and Juliet.” “The Great Ziegfeld,” “After the Thin Man,” “Rose Marie” and many other fine screen achievements. Co-starred in "The Good Earth” are Paul Muni and Louise Rainer, In 1936, both won the individual acting awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Together, their performances defy equal. TO-DAY’S CRICKET. Interesting cricket matches are anticipated this afternoon, under the jurisdiction of the Rangitikei Cricket Association. The games set down for play on the County ground are Old Boys v. Hunterville on No. 1 wicket and Porewa v. Marton on No. 2 wicket. The former match is expected to be keenly contested. Hunterville displayed line form in dismissing last year's champions so easily last Saturday and then only being defeated by a dropped catch. Old Boys’ substantial win against Porewa has given the colts’ eleven greater confidence for their future programme. However, to-day they will be without I. Jolly, who is on annual leave, N. V. Rix-Trott and W. Tolley. The taking part in a military display at the Palmerston North Show of A. B. Marshall (captain), R. Rutherford, and R. Cameron has weakened the Porewa team considerably for their match against Marton. Another absentee in D. A. Cameron, who is attending the annual meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council at Christchurch, further lessens the chances of Porewa in emerging victorious against last year’s champions. I'he silver and green team will, however, have P. Marshall included in its eleven. So far the club has only managed to secure nine players. On the other hand, Marton are at full strength, and on paper appear easy winners. Teams are requested to be ready to take the field at 1.45 p.m. sharp. Stumps will be drawn at 6 o'clock, but should no result be obtained by that time, the match may be continued for another half-hour. Teams to hand are:— Porewa: G. L. Marshall, V. Smith, R. Parkinson, H. Marshall, P. Chapman, J. Shield, P. Marshall, J. D. Smith, G. G. Oliver, A. E. Smith. Old Boys: H. F. Low, S. C. Beechey, A. Duncan. K. Kerr, R. Whitcombe, S. R. Scott, H. Maiden, D.
