OBITUARY

PROF. W. J. WOODHOUSE Received Oct. 27, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 27. The death has occurred of Professor William John Woodhouse, aged 70, Professor of Greek at Sydney University since 1901. Professor William John Woodhouse was born in Westmoreland, England, in 1866, and educated at Sedbergh Grammar School and at Queen’s College, Oxford. There he was an Exhibitioner, and took firstclass honours in Moderations and in Final School Literae Humaniores. He gained a studentship at the British Archaeological School at Athens in 1890, and was twice admitted as Craven Fellow. In 1897-99 he was classical lecturer at the University at j Bangor, North Wales, and in 1900-01 1 was lecturer in ancient history and, political philosophy at the University of St. Andrews. He became Professor of Greek at Sydney University in 1901, and in 1926-29 was Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He was a trustee of the Public Library, and Curator of the Nicholson Museum of Antiquities at Sydney University. He was also an associate editor of the “Classical Review.” He published various works, including a translation of the third book of Tacitus and some historical studies of Greece. DR. CHAS. H. Born in Belfast, Ireland, Dr. Wheeler qualified for his medical degree at Dublin University. His first

medical appointment was as surgeon in the Royal Navy, after which he accepted a medical position with the Perak Government for service in the Malay States. He came to New Zealand in 1901. During the Great Wan he was a medical officer in the New Zealand Medical Corps for a period from 1915 to 1917, and acted as surgeon on two troopships from the Dominion.
