MINISTERIAL STATEMENT

NOT PUBLISHED BY ALL NEWSPAPERS [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 26. When the House of Representatives met this afternoon an urgent question was asked the Minister of Labour by the Rev. Clyde Carr (Govt., Timaru), to the effect that in view of the apparently small number of newspapers which had published a recent statement of the Minister of Labour concerning the unemployment situation, and in view of the importance of the matter, would the Minister say whether copies of the statement were made available to newspapers over a wide area. The Hon. H. T. Armstrong, in reply, said that a full statement had been prepared and arrangements had been made for it to be sent out to 140 newspapers throughout the country for publication by a number of them simultaneously. Only 25 newspapers had published the statement of October. In the absence of a reasonable explanation why 115 papers had not made public news of such importance consideration might have to be given as to some other means of supplying such important information to the public.
