The Wanganui Chronicle. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1937. MISS JEAN BATTEN’S TRIUMPH

qUE triumph o£ Miss Jean Batten in her east-west flight between Australia and England, despite the flow of congratulatory messages, leaves the world very much unmoved to-day, because it is realised that, given the machine and the conditions, many people could do as well. The success of the flight is a triumph of physical endurance and of’ navigation, which latter apparently is no superlative feat, but it is more a triumph of engineering. The world expects that the record established by Miss Batten will soon be lowered, such is the faith which the world has in engineering skill. The pioneering flight days arc, however, over along this route; the new ground will be covered in the laboratories of the scientists.
