Meteorological Office, Wellington, Tuesday, October 26, 3 p.m. General Situation.—A shallow depression is passing eastward off the northern portion of the North Island while another and rather intense one is crossing the South Island. An intense anti-cyclone is advancing from south-eastern Australia on to the Tasman. Forecast.—Winds: North-westerly to northerly at first about Cook Strait, otherwise southerly to south-westerly prevailing, moderate to strong generally and reaching gale force at some exposed positions. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rather rough to rough at times in most places. Eastern Tasman Sea: South-west to southerly winds, moderate in the northern portion with moderate teas; strong to gale force in parts of the southern portion with rather rough to rough seas. Weather: Changeable and rather squally with showers in most districts. Temperatures cold and hail probable in parts of the coastal areas of the South Island and snow on some of the ranges. The New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill, report for 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Bright sunshine, 12 hours 30 minutes. Rainfall, nil. Temperatures: Maximum, 66deg.
