OHAKUNE

OHAKUNE BOWLING CLUB. OPENING DAY. The picturesque Ohakune Bowling green was officially opened on Sunday afternoon. Heavy rain fell during the morning and although further rain threatened, the afternoon’s play was run off successfully. There was a large attendance of local players and quite a number of players from neighbouring clubs were also present. Before proceedings commenced all stood in silence as a mark lof respect to the memory of a former [member —the late Mr. Jack Havler. The president (Mr. Cosford), then welcomed the visitors and paid tribute to the green committee for its work in having the green in such good order for opening day. He then called on the Mayor of Ohakune (Mr. L. Nation) to perform the opening ceremony. Mr. Nation congratulated the club on its choice of president. He was sure they had, in Mr. Cosford, one who would prove to be a real worker in the interests ot the club. His worship then referred to the good fellowship and fraternal atmosphere which seemed to go hand in hand with bowls. Having declared the green open for play, Mr. Nation then called upon the president's wife (Mrs. .Cosford), to throw up the first jack [and deliver the first bowl. This having been successfully accomplished, the bowlers took part in rink games. At the conclusion of play, Mr. C. M. Whyte (president of the Raetihi Bowling club) tendered the thanks of the visitors for an enjoyable day's play and a delightful afternoon tea supplied by the ladies’ committee. The Waimarino Brass Band was in attendance and rendered pleasing and I much appreciated music at intervals I during the afternoon.
