RAETIHI

RAETIHI AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB. The report to be submitted to the annual meeting which is to be held at Mr. J. Haley's rooms on Thursday evening at 7.30 p.m. states as follows: — “The season as far as the swimming club was concerned, was adversely affected by an almost continuous run of unfavourable weather and the infantile paralysis epidemic. On account of this the club's championships and trophies had not been competed for. "Membership.—ln numbers the membership was down on last year's figures. The school children form the bulk of the membership. Alterations. Considerable alterations to the club's property was undertaken during the year. The dressing shed accommodation was completely remodelled, new flooring was installed, and ample seating provided at a cost of f 47 12s 4d. The club now has dressing sheds which are a credit and an asset to the club.

“Income. —Apart from the ordinary fees a considerable help to the club’s finances was provided by Mesdames F. Bryers and A. Head. The club is deeply indebted to these ladies who, by organising dances, augmented the finances to the extent of £25 6s 6d. The Wanganui Swimming Centre also assisted in a difficulty season by refunding the annual affiliation fee.

“Thanks. —The thanks of the club ■ are tendered to Mr. R. Harrison, of [ Wanganui, who has so ably repre- ’ sented the club in the Wanganui [ Centre’s executive, Mr. H. V. Mar- [ shall, the club's auditor, and the ' press, which has at all times been ready to assist in publicity. KAKATAHI GOLF CLUB. On Saturday afternoon the Kakatahi Golf Club held its closing function. There was a large attendance of club members and visitors from the Waimarino and Ohutu Clubs. The links were in fine order and it seems a pity that shearing activities necessitate the early closing of the golf season in this district. A four-ball mixed foursome, which was played during the afternoon, was won by Mr. H. R. Baddeley and Miss I. Cracroft-Wilson with a nett 70. The conclusion of the Kakatahi golf season was celebrated by a highly successful fancy dress dance in Baddeley’s woolshed. Most of those present entered gaily into the spirit of the occasion and appeared in fancy costume, either orthodox, original or humorous. The spirit of revelry ran high and those responsible for the organisation must have felt amply rewarded for their efforts. The judging of the fancy costume, which could have been no light task, was ably carried out by Mesdames C. Boyd, M. Windle and W. Fulton. The prize winners for fancy dresses were as follows:—Best lady’s fancy dress, Mrs. Dod Baddeley. Best men's fancy dress, Mr. Tommy Rowe. Most Daring costume, Mr. Dod Baddeley. A delightful supper was supplied and dancing continued till a late hour. WILFUL DAMAGE. During the past season or two the Waimarino County Council, in an endeavour to beautify road surroundings, has had planted along the Ohakune Road from the cheese factory corner to Makaranui, many young trees of the flowering cherry and kowhai type. Care has been taken with these young trees by providing protection with wire, limber and in some cases sacking. Recently some person or persons have been pulling these young trees out of the ground and breaking them up. It seems difficult to understand the type of mentality that derives its pleasure in such a manner. BOWLING. On Moday at the Raetihi green a progressive pairs tournament was held. After the week-end’s rain the green was a trifle on the heavy side but sunshine helped to improve matters during the afternoon. The most successful lead was C. Davis and the leading skip was F. Soar. Results were as follows:

Leads. Wins. Losses. C. Davis 4 2 J. Shaw 2 A. M. Laing 3 3 A. Head ... 3 A. T. May 21 G. Parkes — 21 3 T. Fogg 21 3 Skips. Wins. Losses. F. Soar 5 1 F. Comer 3 3 A. Paulger 3 3 B. A. Drury 3 J. B. Hogg 21 3 A. E. Urwin 21 3 C. M. Whyte .... 2 4
