AWATEA’S SPEED

NEW WEST-EAST RECORD CAPTAIN’S STATEMENT [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Oct. 25. The Awatea, which left Sydney at 5 o'clock on Friday afternoon arrived at Auckland at 7.1 U o’clock this morning, completing the fastest west to east crossing of the Tasman recorded by any vessel. She steamed at a fast speed through Sydney, Heads at 5.53 and at 8 o’clock the following morning increased it to 22 knots, which she maintained for the remainder oi the voyage. The time taken was 2 days 10 hours 52 minutes, which was 44 minutes better than the Awatea’* previous record of 2 days .11 hours 36 minutes on the corresponding voyage last year. The speed on this crossing averaged 21.80 knots. Captain Davey said that he had not made an attempt on the record, bul simply desired to be tied up at Auckland before 8 o’clock, otherwise lu would have had to pay the crew an additional day’s wages owing to the Labour Day holiday. He said that he likes the Awatea better than ever and there is no ship like her.
