BOWLING

The Waverley and Victoria Clubs opened their greens, visiting rinks attending. These clubs were represented at the openings on the previous Saturday. The weather was gloriously fine and the greens faster than is usual for the time of the year. Most of the local clubs are holding tournaments to-day, and last night the weather prospects were good and the welcome rain of yesterday will be beneficial to all greens, enabling them to be rolled out well and freshening them up generally. WAVERLEY CLUB

OPENING DAY CELEBRATED The Waverley Bowling Club celebrated its opening on Saturday, the occasion being marked by the appearance of several visiting rinks from Wanganui clubs and one from Patea. The green was in good order for so early in the season and in a warm atmosphere, without glare of sun, the players spent an enjoyable day. The rain held off until the games could be brought to a decisive conclusion. The bowlers were the guests of the Waverley ladies at a very enjoyable afternoon tea. Mr. J. E. Palmer, apologising for the absence of Mr. W. Wicks, who was absent owing to a family bereavement, made a short speech of welcome, stressing how congenial it was to have friendly matches among visiting rinks. He said that in competition play for trophies bowls had a tendency to become too serious, to the detriment cf the game. He considered it was time bowls were stopped if the expenses of a team to tour Australia had to be found. The joy of the game was lost when matters became serious. Mr. Palmer recollected the old days, and said that there were only five of the original

members of the club left, Messrs. H. I W. James, A. Howie, M. Southcombe, | J. Mathieson and himself. He re- ‘ gretted that illness had prevented Mr.' Mathieson from attending. The club’s best wishes would be extended to him and the hope expressed that , he would soon on the green again, j Mr. Southcombe, as one of the "old • brigade,” threw the first “kitty” to I the accompaniment of applause.
