MAJESTIC THEATRE

"100 MEN AND A GIRL.” Musical entertainment of a standard seldom reached on the screen is presented in “One Hundrd Men and a Girl,” which commenced on Saturday at the Majestic Theatre. An outstanding feature of this Universal Films production is the return to the : Xuen of Deanna Durbin, whose performance in “Three Smart Girls” met with such widespread and unexpected popularity. Another feature of “One Hundred Men and a Girl” is the appearance of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leopold Stokowski. The stor/ of the production is full of interest, but it is subordinated to the music. Stokowski will be remembered by theatregoers for his brief appearance with his orchestra in “The Big Broadcast of 1937,” but in this film he is given considerable prominence, presenting selections from Liszt, Tchaikowski, Mozart, Beethoven and Verdi. Of these the most delightful is the “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.“ Miss Durbin’s voice is even more enchanting than in “Three Smart Girls,” and her numbers include the “Hallelujah” from Handel’s “Messiah.” In addition she sings some popular numbers. The cast includes Adolphe Menjou, who is excellently cast as a musician. The comedians Mischa Auer and Eugene Pallette also appear prominently. Another member of the cast of “Three Smart Girls,” Alice Brady, is responsible for an amusing characterisation.
