WAVERLEY TO-DAY

THE ANNUAL MEETING GOOD HOLIDAY CARD REVIEW OF PROSPECTS With a field of six carded for the Waverley Cup and another similar field for the Brewer Handicap, the open sprint, the Waverley Racing Club oifers a useful programme ol events for its annual meeting, to be held on the Waverley racecourse today. The prospects for a bumper holiday fixture appear assured, and even if the totalisator turnover does not attain the proportions of the experience during the post-war boom, it should be substantially ahead of last year’s £11,138 10s. The weather has been fine for such a lengthy period that many owners and trainers would appreciate the heavy showers which fell on Saturday night. It may be pointed out that the Waverley course proper has a genrous sole of grass and does not get so nard as other tracks.

The totalisator will be operated on the single-pool system, with dividends on first and second horses in the proportions of 75 and 25 per cent, where there are live or more starters. Thus there should be two dividends in each of the seven events to be decided. A dividend indicator will be used and should be appreciated by patrons. A special train will leave Wanganui at 9 o'clock this morning and the return train will leave tne racecourse platform at 5.30 p.m. Holiday excursion fares will be available.

For patrons who travel to Waverley by motor-car ample provision has been made in the direction of carparking accommodation. Instead of a single gateway to the car-park there will be a double entrance, with a special runway extending some 30 yards into the ground, this method being devised to avoid congestion on the main road when motorists stop to purchase admission tickets.

The first race, set down to start at 12 noon, is the Handicap Hack Hurdles, for which there are eight carded. The Don Erma-Booklaw bracket promises to be the favourite selection, though Even Money has been consistent and should run prominently. Swift and Sure is another that will not lack friends. Two Wan-ganui-trained candidates are Master Norval and Cyclopean, but both will have to show decided improvement if they are to get in the money. On the minimum the Waverley-trained Kaere Nui and Gold Tor must have chances, but one cannot go past the topweights. Seven are engaged in the Brewer Handicap, but Notium is reported to be a doubtful starter. Lady Kyra finished second to Farmer last year, was third the year before, and scored in the previous season, so it will be interesting to see how she fares with topweight in an effort to repeat her 1934 success. Most opposition appears likely to come from Airing, who can be relied on to run a good race, while Bantry must also be respected. Le Grand, who appears in the official book as being out of Motley, whereas he is another of famous Eulogy’s progeny, may be found in galloping mood, and Race Boy has won in his only two starts to date. Dancing Lady has done well on the tracks. Il looks like Lady Kyra being the favourite. The usual large field will contest the Morton Memorial Maiden Race, for which no fewer than sixteen made the acceptance. Five of these are Wanganui-trained candidates, these being Golden Pam (half-sister to Aga Khan), Amatory, Fair Isle, Sams Choice (naif-brother to Ail Humbug; and Captain Treville. Sam's Choice will carry the colours of Mr. F. Bristol, who won this race with Sanhedrim last year. Narrator, Sam's Choice and Gay Marionette should do best.

Next is the Wilson Hack Highweight, with a field of twelve. If Umpire is in galloping mood he will have a good chance, and Winsome Lu also looks a likely sort. All Spirit has run some good races and Mustang is another useful sort. Gaily and Bonny Glow will have friends but three that appeal are All Spirit, Winsome Lu and Umpire. The old-established Waverley Cup has not drawn as good a field as could have been desired, but the presence of a New Zealand Cup candidate in Friesland lends interest to the event. The topweight should be the favourite, with Gold Mission providing formidable opposition. If the track is not too hard Reipar might beat the pair named. Another field of sixteen is engaged in the Moumahaki Hack Stakes, for which a trophy nas been provided by Mr. George Spriggens and family. If Airing starts here he will be favourite, but in his absence AH Spirit, Ned Cuttie and Ngatirahiri would be preferred. As in the previous race, defections may reduce the field somewhat for the Jackson Memorial Stakes, but Cute Melody, Race Call and Shangri-La are a speedy trio, with Sam’s Choice likely if he shows up in the maiden race. Riding engagements announced for to-day include:— R. W. Savage: Even Money, Ohanga, Hunting Spy. G. P. Dowrick: Mustang, Gay Marionette, Cloak. R. Sargent: Cloudy Bay, Cute Melody. S. Hawkes: Seaham, Student Prince. L. Clifford: Fafncr. C. Cole: Narrator, Arahura. S. Edwards: Ned Cuttie, Reipar, Lady Hoariri, Amatory, Dancing Lady. P. Button: Swift and Sure, St. Cedric, Vienna. L. Monkley: Friesland, Race Call, Naughty Marietta. W. Houton: Le Grand. H. Fryer: Advance Plane, Kia Ora, Reo Ra, Fox Moth. K. Grylls: Gold Glare, Le Marquis. J. W.
