ALLEGED BLACKMAIL

REMAND GRANTED f Per Press Association. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 22. “Balckmail is it?” queried Mr Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when Joseph Dyer appeared before him. Dyer was charged that between November, 1933, and August 6, 1937, with intent to extort money, he accused a man of a serious crime, indecent assault on a male. Dyer was remanded to appear on November 1. “I ask that it be made very substantial, as this is a serious crime,” said Detective-Sergeant Holmes when application was made for bail. The detective-sergeant added that two other charges of a different nature would be preferred. The magistrate fixed bail at self £3OO, with one surety of £3OO, a condition being that Dyer should report daily to the police. On the application of DetectiveSergeant Holmes the name of the person from whom it was alleged that Dyer had attempted to obtain money was suppressed.
